Riri

Overview

Riri/Rio (リリ/リオ) is one of the main characters in the Romantic Killer series, alongside Anzu Hoshino.

Appearance[]

Riri takes the form of a small, yellow creature. Riri is round in shape with small round ears and slim twig-like arms and legs. Riri has small round black eyes, a nose resembling that of a dog's, and a slim flat mouth. Riri wears a bright purple wizard's hat decorated with light colored stars, a wizard cloak of the same color with a purple pink star-decorated undercoat and carries around a flimsy wand resembling a flower with a star at the tip.

Human Form[]

Through magic, Riri can take the form of a fair-skinned male or female with blonde hair and cyan-blue eyes that has a hint of purple on top (from up close):

As Riri Fushigi (female), she has chin-length hair that is tied in two small buns on either side while the rest of her hair is left down with bangs hanging over her eyebrows.
As Rio Fushigi (male), his hair is very short with bangs swept to the left side.

Personality[]

Whether Riri is in their human form or in their wizard-like creature form, they are still extremely hyper and talkative. Riri is very interested in anything love-like which is shown in Episode 8 when Riri asks Anzu to go on a date so they can learn more, as well as analyzing the movie they decided to watch.

Riri is shown being very cutesy, but sometimes straight up embarrassing. Riri’s sole purpose is to help non-heroine like people find love!

Magic[]

As a wizard, Riri can do many spells to help set up romantic scenarios for Anzu Hoshino.

Riri was able to manipulate events such as the weather, the timeline meetings when others reunite, and take away her three great desires video games, chocolate and Momohiki.
- Riri does so by having her parents confiscate her video games, have every store she goes to be out of chocolate, and have her parents go to America and have Momohiki brought with them. If someone tries to give Anzu chocolate shown when Makoto Oda tried to give her one, Riri created a barrier that stopped her from getting it.
  - However Riri did offer them back if she accepted Hijiri Koganei's gifts which were related to those and gave him a chance which she ends up rejected them in the end.
Riri was able to use their magic to transform into a boy and girl when they need to intervene with Anzu's life
They also can make themselves visible to only Anzu and whenever they talk to Anzu they create a illusion of Anzu acting normal to not make her look like she was talking to air and have others think she is crazy.
If Anzu tries to tell anyone about Riri or the experiment it will give her an upset stomach.

Limits[]

Riri stated they have to abide by rules set by their company as they are not allowed to do any "Taboo spells".

They aren't allowed to use any mind control or use a love spell to make their subjects fall in love with a boy and stated if they are allowed to do that then Riri would had done it sooner.
They can only use magic to help Anzu Hoshino in relationship related spells and can't separate her from potential love interests.
They can't use it for personal reasons. One example is when Riri used a memory erase spell on Yukana Kishi to make her completely forget about Tsukasa Kazuki, which caused Riri to be punished until Anzu found a loophole that allowed them to let them work with her again.
If their wand gets dirty or contaminated, the wand is useless until it's cleaned.

Etymology[]

The name “Riri” 音 meaning "sound" or from Japanese 利 (ri) meaning "profit, benefit" combined with 々, a phonetic character indicting a duplication of the beginning kanji.

Trivia[]

The cover art of the fourth printed volume of the Romantic Killer manga has both the male and female human forms of Riri match the color scheme of the nonbinary flag, with their hair yellow and both their outfits having a black, white, and purple color scheme.
Riri never drank boba tea until Episode 8.
